Classroom Assistant Class Teacher
In Primary 2 we are becoming much more confident in our mental maths. We are developing our ability to recall our number bonds to 10 and our double facts. In Primary 2 we are fantastic at counting and we can count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We now know and understand many different words that mean addition, subtraction and equals.
In maths we enjoy taking part in practical learning activities. We use numicon and cuisenaire to help us with our addition and subtraction calculations. We can also decide ourselves if we want to use numicon, cuisenaire, multi-link or a number line to help us solve word problems.
We use our mathematical skills to estimate before we count when making 3d models and when measuring. We can measure and compare objects by length, weight and area. Telling the time is very important so we are not late for school and in Primary 2 we learn to tell the time using o’clock and half past. In Primary 2 we use our topic in maths to sort items and we can choose ourselves to use a venn, carroll or tree diagram. We can use data collected about our topics to make graphs. We know the names of and can also sort 2d and 3d shapes.
We enjoy using money and paying for items in our role-play areas. In Primary 2 we can make amounts of money in different ways, add the price of 2 objects together and give the correct amount of change. We can write price labels and are working hard to make sure our numbers are correctly written.
Ways to help in me in my Maths:
• Let me play with coins. Play shop at home with me and I can write price labels, add the prices together and give you change.
• Help me learn by numbers by using the dice in my homework bag to add the dots together. Counting the dots on dominoes is also a very good way for helping me know my number bonds.
• Show me and ask me the time on the clock.
• I can measure the length of objects at home using paper clips, lego and duplo.
In Primary 2 we are starting to further develop our reading and writing skills. We love to write and we try to use spaces, capitals and full stops in our writing. Our teacher loves to see us using new words and we try to sound out new words on our try line before we put them into our sentences.
We are learning our High Frequency Words to help us with reading. Our teacher gives us Bookmarks which we can take home to help us to learn these words.
We use the Oxford Reading Tree books to help us to learn to read. In class we read lots of different story books, information books, poetry and plays.
We love books and we have a beautiful school library which we visit every week to borrow books. We also get to visit the local Whiterock Library.
We love talking about our learning and listening to our teacher and each other. Every day we have opportunities to share our learning with our classmates and to learn from them by listening to what they have done. We also practise our talking and listening when we perform for the whole school.
We already know most of our sounds and in P2 we are learning about all the different ways we can write sounds.
We sort words by the way we write the sounds and practice breaking up words (segmenting) and blending the sounds to say the word. This helps us when we meet new words in our reading and want to write new words.
P2 are very lucky to have a special COMET assistant, Dorota, who helps us with our language skills and sound work every Thursday.
Ways Adults Can Help Me With My Literacy:
• Encourage me to notice words on signs and labels at home, in the shops and out in the local area.
• Read to me, not just my reading books but my school Library book. Ask me to re-tell the story to you afterwards.
• Talk to me about my day and ask me what I have learned.
• Take me to the Library
• Encourage me to try to write for myself at home, especially to sound out words when I write a sentence.
Play Based Learning in P2
Play is an important part of the curriculum in P2. We aim to build on the experiences that children have had in Nursery and Primary 1 and extend their knowledge and skills through carefully planned activities.
Learning through play activities are connected to the current class topic and give the children opportunities to learn about all of the strands of the ‘World Around Us’. They frequently have a maths, literacy or ICT focus as well.
Thinking skills and Personal Capabilities are core to play based learning and children are encouraged to:
- Ask questions and find out for themselves
- Make comparisons
- Work co-operatively with each other
- Make decisions
- Solve problems
- Explore new materials
- Be creative
- Make connections between different areas of learning
- Share their learning with others
As well as providing a meaningful environment for learning, play based learning develops children’s confidence and social skills. It is also great fun!
